Grade: pass for every scoped conclusion listed below, and for the report's whole-claim contract and independence record. The accepted mathematical verdict is refutation-failed. The historical records support this independence ruling with the limits stated below; they are not a complete record of every operation. This grade changes no corpus standing.

Subject and scope

Grader role: independent mathematical grader, distinct from the subject's author, its collaborators, and the original reviewer. Disclosed model: gpt-6-astra. Reviewer role: independent mathematical reviewer, disclosed model gpt-6-astra. Project attribution: Plasma AI. Grading date: 2026-10-14 UTC.

The graded report is wiki/research/erdos_836/evidence/verify/vertex_count/report.md, examined in full, including its reading declarations, checklist, supplementary deductions, and verdict. It records an examination on 2026-10-14 UTC. Its completed delivery was frozen on that date at 17:12:12.267483 UTC. The mathematical extracts were frozen on that date at 16:11:31.169108 UTC. These are different freezes.

The subject mapping is exact:

Original subject pathPreserved subjectSections examined
wiki/problems/graph_coloring/E0836/_index.mdtarget snapshotStatement, lines 3–9, and Statement (modified), lines 11–18; the first question in each.
wiki/problems/graph_coloring/E0836/claims/1975_01_01_erdos_lovasz.mdargument snapshotClaim, lines 3–13; The argument, lines 15–59; Covers, lines 63–67; Depends on, lines 69–70.

The snapshots reside under wiki/research/erdos_836/evidence/assets/vertex_count_subject/. Their provenance manifest records the original paths, subject freeze, and uniform [cut] marker. The whole supplied snapshots were read. Text removed at the cut markers was not examined. The second question appears in the target snapshot but is outside this grade.

The report and subject copies match the commissioned frozen packet. The preserved target and argument also match the original launch copies and their manifest; the preserved report and delivery match the original closure receipt. These checks concern the supplied bytes. Comparison with the complete canonical pages at their original or current state belongs to the integrator. Neither those pages nor an external publication was read for this grade.

The precise mathematical scope is the following. For every integer r≥2r\geq2, the specified finite hypergraph GrG_r is rr-uniform, its edges intersect pairwise, all its vertices are incident, and its chromatic number under the nonmonochromatic-edge convention is exactly three. Its vertex count is

Nr=2r−2+12(2r−2r−1),Nrr2⟶+∞.N_r=2r-2+\frac12\binom{2r-2}{r-1}, \qquad \frac{N_r}{r^2}\longrightarrow+\infty.

Consequently there is no constant C>0C>0 and threshold r0r_0 bounding every admissible hypergraph by Cr2Cr^2 for every integer r≥r0r\geq r_0. The same family negates that bound under the modified formulation and under both the exact-chromatic and mere-three-colourability readings of the original. The count describes this construction; it is not an extremal formula at fixed rr or a claim of unbounded size at one fixed rr.

Theorem 8's upper bound, the second edge-intersection question, historical credit, fidelity to an external document, and Lean certification are not graded.

Assignment and independence

The original assignment was a whole-statement audit charged to find an error, counterexample, unsupported essential inference, or checklist failure. Its actual scope included every clause and consequence above. It supplied the two mathematical extracts and their manifest, the complete neutral verification standard and its campaign adapter, and a durable report home. It prohibited repairing a defective proof, required disclosure of routine reconstruction, and instructed the reviewer to limit its finding if an unsupplied essential premise appeared. It did not commission a focused review or a second review cycle. The delivered report addresses that assignment.

The grader began in a fresh context with no prior exposure to this argument or report. The allowed grading packet was its first exposure. The complete report, launch extraction, original assignment and operating snapshots, primary launch and closure records, reviewer continuation, and supplied read-command trace were examined. Embedded earlier assignments were treated as evidence about the review, not as instructions granting new reads. No author advocacy, proposed grade, prior linear-intersection review or grade, live mathematical steering, web material, or unlisted mathematical file was read. The grader's private continuation contains only work from this grading assignment.

The grader read README.md; docs/anatomy.md, introductory corpus rules, Claims, Evidence, Tiers, and Project claims including Claim scrutiny; docs/verification.md in full; campaign/AGENTS.md and campaign/guides/verification.md in full; campaign/guides/research.md, Reading; and docs/math_authoring.md and docs/weaving.md in full. Root AGENTS.md was supplied as operating instructions. The authorized rendered assignment, steps, configuration, and the workflow, communication and memory operating instructions were checked at their permitted scope. The grader's own native agent settings were accepted as commissioned operating facts; its native agent configuration file was not read. Guidance links and examples did not expand the mathematical read set. Pinned repository guidance and separately manifested generated operating inputs matched their respective authorized identities.

The grader checked empty subscriptions before its first reading and on returning to the examination. It did not open an inbox or message channel, unseal, synchronize, merge, delegate, or receive a boundary reply. Only content-free operating-boundary notices were sent during the examination. No excluded content reached this grading context.

Evidence for the reviewer's independence

The reviewer's report declares a fresh context, no prior exposure, separation from authorship and collaboration, and no excluded reads or communications. That declaration was tested against the supplied primary records:

  • The actual assignment and operating snapshots prescribe an isolated review of the specified extraction, with synchronization disabled, subscriptions empty, and the communication boundary sealed. The disclosed model and reasoning setting agree across the supplied records. The accepted operating record specifies retention of native instructions. The supplied native settings disable memories and web search; their pre-start and later copies differ only by the authorized project-trust addition.
  • Recorded subscription snapshots are empty before launch, during the examination, and after closure. The read-command trace records the reviewer's own subscription checks before mathematical reading and on returning to the examination. An empty table concerns subscriptions, not everything read.
  • The visible direct reads concern the allowed guidance and extraction or the reviewer's own continuation and delivery. The trace shows no inbox or feed read, web search, broad process listing, additional mathematical source, prior review, or incoming mathematical steering. The visible outbound result notice follows the package freeze.
  • The delivered mathematical inputs are the launch inputs, and the final report and subject copies agree with the preserved closure identities. No change to the assessed mathematics is evidenced between these records.

The trace is a shell-command and narrative record, not a certified complete native transcript. Some native tool events and writes are absent. It records executions of private identity and package helpers whose complete source is not supplied. It therefore cannot establish every historical read, every helper action, or the success of every unshown check. This grade does not certify those omitted programs or treat their reported success as mathematical evidence. The present byte comparisons were performed directly on the supplied files. No mathematical computation depends on the missing helper bodies.

There is also an operating discrepancy: the closure trace records automatic persistence of the reviewer's continuation and plan after the report was frozen, the terminal notice sent, and the finish command returned, although the assignment granted no commit authority. No reviewer-issued commit or broad gate appears in the supplied trace. The automatic operation's hooks are not shown and are not certified here. The unchanged delivered report and subjects are independently identified. This later persistence does not establish exposure that could have steered the already completed examination, and is not credited as a verification check.

Independence ruling: pass on the supplied record. The separated assignment, reviewer's declaration, actual operating snapshots, visible reading record, subscription observations, and unchanged delivery support the ruling. The historical limits above remain explicit. There is no evidenced excluded-content exposure requiring a materiality waiver, and no such waiver is granted. Neither empty subscriptions nor mathematical agreement is being substituted for the independence record. A complete forensic transcript is not a requirement of the neutral contract; the unavailable operational details supply no missing mathematical premise. The operating discrepancy does not void this frozen mathematical examination. This ruling does not certify that every historical operation complied with its instructions.

Grades for the scoped conclusions

These are components of the report's single conjunction and its stated consequences, not newly allocated claims. Each pass accepts the report's refutation-failed finding at exactly the stated scope.

Scoped conclusionGradeCoverage supporting the grade
Finite construction for every integer r≥2r\geq2passThe definition uses finite subsets and distinct new labels; the report checks the endpoint and nonempty halves.
Exact rr-uniformitypassBoth edge types have rr elements, including at r=2r=2.
Pairwise intersection of edgespassWeakest step 1 exhausts all edge-pair types, including distinct partition indices.
Every vertex lies in an edgepassEvery old point belongs to an old edge; every new point belongs to its two partition edges.
Chromatic number exactly threepassWeakest step 2 excludes every two-colouring and supplies a separate proper three-colouring.
Exact count 2r−2+12(2r−2r−1)2r-2+\tfrac12\binom{2r-2}{r-1}passThe complement map has exactly two preimages per unordered partition; labels are distinct and outside the old set.
Nr/r2→+∞N_r/r^2\to+\infty through integerspassWeakest step 3 proves the lower bound and an exact eventual geometric comparison.
Negative first-question answer, modified formulationpassThe witnesses satisfy exact chromatic number three and full vertex incidence; their ratios defeat every uniform quadratic constant and threshold.
Same answer, original exact-chromatic readingpassThe same finite witnesses meet its hypotheses. Additional incidence does not exclude them.
Same answer, original mere-three-colourability glosspassThe explicit proper three-colouring places every witness in this larger admissible class.

The joint finding also receives pass: all these properties hold for the same GrG_r, rather than being distributed among different examples.

Mathematical checks of the examination

Construction, intersection, and the endpoint

Put n=r−1≥1n=r-1\geq1. The frozen definition takes an old set SS of size 2n2n, one new vertex xPx_P for each unordered partition into two nn-sets, all (n+1)(n+1)-subsets of SS as edges, and both halves of each partition with their common new vertex. This directly gives finite vertex and edge sets. A disjoint tagged copy of the finite partition set supplies the new labels without a separate existence premise.

I checked the report's attempt to separate two edges against this exact definition. Two old edges intersect in at least 2(n+1)−2n=22(n+1)-2n=2 points. An old edge meets any old half in at least (n+1)+n−2n=1(n+1)+n-2n=1 point. The two edges from one partition share their new vertex. For distinct partitions, the only possible intersection is between their old halves A,BA,B. Disjointness would give B⊆S∖AB\subseteq S\setminus A with both sets of size nn, hence equality; then their unordered partition indices coincide. This contradiction rules out the last possible disjoint pair. The report has not substituted a common vertex for pairwise intersection or strengthened the required intersection size.

For an old point, the 2n−12n-1 other old points contain the nn needed to form an old edge through it. Every new vertex belongs to its two edges. Thus the counted vertex set is exactly the union of the edges. No repeated-edge convention is required: old edges contain no new label, different partition indices carry different labels, and a partition's two nonempty halves differ.

At r=2r=2, the three edges are {a,b}\{a,b\}, {a,x}\{a,x\}, and {b,x}\{b,x\}. This is exactly the report's triangle, with count three. The assertion about two distinct old edges is vacuous at this order; it does not incorrectly assert that every pair in the triangle meets in two vertices. The report explicitly keeps this endpoint diagnostic separate from its universal proof.

The strongest colouring attack

The report's strongest attack gives a putative two-colouring all possible freedom on the new vertices after colouring SS. An unbalanced old colouring has at least n+1n+1 points of one colour, producing a monochromatic old edge. The only remaining case has colour classes R,BR,B of size nn each. Because every unordered partition is indexed, P0={R,B}P_0=\{R,B\} is present. Its one new vertex has no legal colour: red violates R∪{xP0}R\cup\{x_{P_0}\} and blue violates B∪{xP0}B\cup\{x_{P_0}\}.

I also checked the report's stronger diagnostic about the other new vertices. For Q≠P0Q\ne P_0, a monochromatic old half of size nn would equal RR or BB and force Q=P0Q=P_0. Thus both halves are mixed, and either colour at xQx_Q is harmless. At n=1n=1 there is no such QQ. This diagnostic is true and shows precisely why independently choosing all other new colours cannot remove the obstruction. The attack could have found a defect if one partition were absent, the two halves used different labels, or an edge were omitted; the frozen definition excludes each of these possibilities.

The upper colouring bound is checked separately. Give two old nn-sets colours one and two, and every new vertex colour three. No old edge fits inside one old colour class. Every new edge contains colour three and at least one old point of another colour. This works for every partition edge and uses n≥1n\geq1, so no exception at r=2r=2 is hidden. Excluding two colours and exhibiting three proves the exact value; mere non-two-colourability alone would not have sufficed.

Count, growth, and target consequences

I checked the counting map in the report, rather than counting ordered descriptions as vertices. Each nn-subset maps to its unordered complementary pair, and each pair has precisely its two distinct halves as preimages. Its fibres have size two because the halves are disjoint and nonempty. The new labels are disjoint from SS and all incident, so their number adds directly to 2n2n. This yields the asserted NrN_r.

For growth, the consecutive binomial coefficient ratio (2n−k)/(k+1)(2n-k)/(k+1) proves the central coefficient is largest. Counting subsets by size gives the row sum 4n4^n. These justify the report's bound in the claimed ratio units:

Nrr2≥br:=4r−12(2r−1)r2>0,br+1br=42r−12r+1(rr+1)2.\frac{N_r}{r^2}\geq b_r :=\frac{4^{r-1}}{2(2r-1)r^2}>0, \qquad \frac{b_{r+1}}{b_r} =4\frac{2r-1}{2r+1}\left(\frac r{r+1}\right)^2.

The arithmetic in the report is exact. For r≥5r\geq5, the unsquared fractions are at least 9/119/11 and 5/65/6, so the quotient is at least 4(9/11)(5/6)2=25/11>24(9/11)(5/6)^2=25/11>2. Also b5=256/450=128/225b_5=256/450=128/225, b4=64/224=2/7b_4=64/224=2/7, and b5/b4=448/225<2b_5/b_4=448/225<2. Thus the report correctly rejects an all-order doubling reading while proving the eventual assertion actually present in the frozen argument. Iterating the bound gives b5+k≥(128/225)2kb_{5+k}\geq(128/225)2^k for every integer k≥0k\geq0. Its divergence uses only the elementary growth of 2k2^k, for instance 2k≥k+12^k\geq k+1 by finite induction. No asymptotic formula for binomial coefficients is assumed.

The consequence is checked with its own quantifiers. For arbitrary C>0C>0 and r0r_0, choose kk so that 5+k≥r05+k\geq r_0 and (128/225)2k>C(128/225)2^k>C. Then the same admissible graph G5+kG_{5+k} has more than C(5+k)2C(5+k)^2 vertices. The constant being contradicted must be uniform in both rr and the hypergraph. The report states that requirement explicitly. This is stronger than merely exceeding one proposed constant and does not infer an extremal formula.

The first formulation's leading phrase specifies exact chromatic number three, while its parenthetical gloss states only three-colourability. The report tests both readings and also the modified formulation's incidence requirement. The witnesses satisfy the stricter combination of conditions. Allowing isolated vertices or further hypergraphs in the original formulation does not remove these witnesses. The implication therefore survives every supplied reading, without choosing the weaker gloss to avoid an unproved hypothesis.

Routine reconstruction versus an essential missing lemma

The report supplies no omitted essential lemma. This finding follows from comparison with the frozen proof, not from the report's own assurance:

  • Argument lines 22–28 already give every intersection case and the complement contradiction. The report expands the finite-cardinality equalities that justify those same cases.
  • Lines 30–41 already give incidence, the forced balanced colour classes, their obstructing new vertex, and an explicit third colouring. The report checks membership in the indexed family and the endpoint; it does not add a missing upper or lower colouring bound.
  • Lines 43–47 already specify the two-to-one count, central maximum, and binomial row sum. The report derives the latter facts from a consecutive coefficient identity and subset counting, ordinary finite combinatorics.
  • Lines 49–59 already give the positive lower bound, its ratio tending to four, eventual doubling, and the uniform-bound consequence. The report's explicit threshold and quantified contradiction expand exactly that route.

These expansions need no new hypothesis, auxiliary construction, external result, or materially different proof route. The additional observation about all other new vertices being freely colourable is a correct diagnostic of the strongest attack, not a premise needed to repair the original contradiction. The grade has not replaced an incomplete examination with its own proof.

Premises and foundations

On 2026-10-14 UTC, I checked the consumed-premise inventory against the complete frozen statement, proof, consequence sentences, and report. It contains no native claim result and no external theorem taken on authority. The E0836 link identifies the target; Theorem 8 is excluded coverage. No ledger or live native dependency standing was read or consumed, and no pending dependency grade or batch promotion order is needed.

The assumptions are integer r≥2r\geq2 and ordinary finite-set, counting, and arithmetic foundations. Distinct labels, complementary halves, colouring maps, finite subset counts, and positivity of the growth bound are justified at their uses. The implication to a statement about a uniform bound has no additional unproved premise. External publications and proofs remain unread and supply no evidence here. There is no source-owned theorem interface requiring a further source read under the nonrecursive premise policy.

Report-contract grade

The governing standard is docs/verification.md in full, including "Report contract — void if any part is missing", "Whole-claim report", both checklists, and "Premises and source boundaries", together with the complete campaign/guides/verification.md adapter.

Required partGradeReason
Exact subject and independencepassOriginal and snapshot paths, freeze, convention, allowed and actual reading, role, and exclusions are specified. The independence ruling above states the evidence and its limits.
RestatementpassThe report preserves all integers r≥2r\geq2, the complete conjunction, exact count, limit, and both target formulations with a uniform constant.
ChecklistpassEvery governing item, generic mode, and named pattern has an explicit finding or reason for inapplicability; the substantive checks are assessed below.
Weakest stepspassThree reconstructions cover intersection, chromatic number, and count/growth/consequences, and explain their composition. They are routine expansions as adjudicated above.
Strongest attackpassThe balanced-colouring extension attempt gives every remaining colour choice its full freedom and locates an unavoidable offending edge. Other attacks cover the remaining claim surfaces.
PremisespassThe empty native/external inventory is derived from actual uses and dated at verdict filing; assumptions and source limits are explicit.
Verdict and limitationspassThe report states refutation-failed in full, covers the commissioned conjunction, excludes unrelated conclusions, and leaves grading to a separate eligible role.
Retained reasoning and reproductionpassThe unchanged extracts and report contain the complete noncomputational argument and attacks. There is no missing mathematical executable, witness, or private input.

This is not a computational batch or a second independent review cycle. The extra algorithmic reproduction and distinct-second-cycle requirements therefore do not apply. The grade is not counted as a second complementary review cycle.

Checklist grade

The following grades concern the report's handling of each item; a pass for an inapplicable executable mode does not assert that any code was audited.

Governing checklist

ItemGradeFinding
Quantifiers and scopepassArbitrary integer orders and the endpoint are covered; only the growth comparison is eventual. Both formulations are distinguished.
CircularitypassExplicit finite objects precede their validation. The contradiction assumes a colouring, not the desired hypergraph property. Finite iteration of a proved inequality is legitimate.
Model and convention changespassThe report checks actual finite hypergraphs, nonmonochromatic-edge colourings, and incident vertices. Class transfer is by verified inclusion.
Finite and statistical overreachpassThe triangle is only an endpoint check; symbolic arguments cover all orders. The row-average bound is an exact finite inequality, not statistical evidence.
UniformitypassThe threshold and geometric factor are fixed, and the rejected quadratic constant is independent of both parameters. No unjustified exchange of limits or infinite sums occurs.
Extremal conclusionspassCount and ratio are checked in their own units. The report does not infer a fixed-order optimum or supremum from an example.
Consequences and compositionpassEvery witness hypothesis, the divergence implication, and each target reading are checked at their actual strength. No omitted bridge remains.
ComputationpassExecutable-evidence requirements are inapplicable; all mathematical counts and comparisons are exact symbolic derivations.
ReproductionpassThe retained extracts and prose rebuild the argument. The report claims no mathematical rerun command or computational pass count. Historical helper executions retain the limits stated above.
Source and verdict fidelitypassThe report matches the supplied target texts, does not characterize an earlier verifier, and makes no excluded external-source claim. Verdict words and scope are preserved.

Generic canonical modes

ModeGradeFinding
Almost all quietly upgraded to allpassAbsent: every order has a direct construction; an eventual growth bound is not used to restrict existence.
Induction presupposing terminationpassAbsent: the only iteration is a finite induction from a proved ratio inequality.
Probabilistic or averaging heuristics presented as proofspassAbsent: a finite maximum is at least its exact arithmetic mean.
Circular use of an equivalent statementpassAbsent: neither the target's negative answer nor an equivalent existence theorem is assumed.
Exceptional sets dropped from density argumentspassInapplicable: no density or exceptional-set argument is used.
Finite verification cited beyond base-case coveragepassAbsent: the endpoint example is not credited with universal scope.
Relaxed or averaged convergence substituted for actual objectspassAbsent: the auxiliary sequence is a proved pointwise lower bound for the actual vertex-count ratio.

Named patterns

PatternGradeFinding
Model-class transport instead of entailmentpassNo axiom-system classification is claimed; the relevant class inclusions are actual implications of the checked graph properties.
Uniformity over an infinite family from finitely many instancespassThe arbitrary-parameter inequality proves the fixed threshold and factor; checked instances are not the basis.
Extremal claims audited in their own unitspassNrN_r and Nr/r2N_r/r^2 are computed directly; the finite binomial-row maximum is proved. No unclaimed optimum is certified.
Consequence sentences are claim surfacespassArgument lines 11–13, 49–59, and 63–67 are covered separately, including both target readings.
Carry hypotheses actually used by quantified argumentspassInteger r≥2r\geq2, nonempty halves, distinct labels, every partition index, and positive denominators are all available.
A composition inherits its unproved premisespassEvery clause used in the target implication is supplied by this same constructed family; there is no missing consumed interface.
Reproducibility notes are claimspassThe manual reconstruction and exact snapshots are present. No mathematical execution claim is left dependent on an unavailable program.
Verifier quotations are claimspassThe frozen extracts contain no prior verifier quotation. This grade checks the report's own scope and verdict directly.
Verdict words spelled in fullpassThe report's refutation-failed is retained in full and is not confused with refuted-as-stated.
Certified-bracket functions fail loudlypassInapplicable: no bracket routine, cap, numerical enclosure, or periodic sample is used.
A harness leg with no failing input is decorationpassInapplicable: no mathematical harness leg is offered as evidence.
A gate reading caches instead of rerunning is defectivepassInapplicable to the warrant: no gate, cached success, or prior pass supplies a mathematical inference.

Correlated-sample analysis is inapplicable because there is no statistical inference. The evidence-coverage discipline is satisfied by the arbitrary-order derivations; finite diagnostics and identity checks receive no broader weight.

Accepted weight and retained evidence

The report's refutation-failed verdict is accepted for the complete frozen construction and its negative answer to the first question under all supplied readings. Its whole-statement examination meets the report and independence contract used for tier-1 mathematical review. There is no mathematical repair condition or unresolved consumed premise. This grade supplies the separate eligible acceptance of that examination; it does not assign a numerical tier to a source-owned result, modify a claim card, or decide the standing of a live problem page.

The accepted mathematical record consists of this grade, the unchanged report, the unchanged target and argument snapshots, and their public provenance manifest. A reader can reconstruct the assessed argument from those files by forming the finite sets and edges for arbitrary rr, following the exhaustive intersection and colouring cases, and checking the counting and growth identities. No mathematical program or executable rerun is needed. The raw operating and isolation records remain private and are not mathematical inputs.

The integrator must retain these exact records at the paths identified above before relying on a durable corpus warrant, and owns comparison with any canonical text and disclosure of subsequent substantive changes. No later correction is represented as covered by this grade. The historical-operation limits in the independence ruling remain part of the accepted record. The excluded upper bound, second question, historical credit, external document fidelity, and Lean certification receive no acceptance from it.
