Erdős 699: the critical certificate after removing the power of two
Uniform cubic proof attempt · Earlier cubic reductions
For a hypothetical bad cubic triple, write
At an active odd prime-power component of , the pair reduces to one of the integer points , with . The six relevant points, for , are therefore
A possible improvement to the polynomial argument is to use a large power of . At this factor is , and its power of two can be removed exactly. The following elementary result describes the critical degree after doing so. It rules out a strict improvement by this particular construction; it does not rule out a different proof of the cubic case.
1. The polynomial through the other five points is unique
Put
Lemma. Let , and let be nonzero. Suppose that vanishes to order at least at each of
Then . If , then
Proof. Suppose . Remove the maximal powers of the two line factors:
Here , neither nor divides , and . Restriction of to is a nonzero univariate polynomial. Its two marked points have multiplicity at least , since is nonzero there. Restriction to similarly gives three points of multiplicity at least . Consequently
If and , the degree on the left is at most , whereas the second inequality requires at least , a contradiction. Thus implies . Since , this forces and .
Likewise, if and , the degree is at most , contradicting the first inequality. So gives the same conclusion.
In the remaining case , inequalities (1) give
The first says , and the second therefore implies , contradicting the case assumption. The only possibility is , , and constant. This also proves that is impossible.
2. What removing the power of two achieves
Let vanish to order at least at all six points. Write
where is maximal. The factor is nonzero at the other five points, so satisfies the lemma. At evaluation,
Thus, when the factor is removed in this way, the remaining degree in is at least . At the critical degree , the lemma forces
Since , the multiplicity at the origin also forces . Formula (2) becomes
There is no dependence on . For the minimal choice , this is a scalar multiple of the very odd part whose divisibility the argument is using:
For example, normalizing by gives exactly after removing . It gives an identity, with no strict inequality to contradict integrality. Additional powers only insert the factor into this identity.
The conclusion is specific: uniform multiplicity at these six points, with only powers of discounted by their known power of two, cannot produce a remaining degree below . At degree , the certificate is forced to be independent of the column. This does not address constructions using different local conditions, cancellation beyond that explicit factor, or the higher Lucas digits. It supplies no finiteness theorem for bad cubic triples.
